Basketball Drills

Basketball is a sport that many people enjoy playing. For those who play, basketball drills are a common part of the process. There are many types of basketball drills that will help players learn how to handle the ball and play as a team during a game.

Basket Races

Basket races involve the team being split into two even groups. Each player is designated a number and will have an opponent on the corresponding team with the same number. The coach will then call out numbers, often randomly, and the two players with that number will compete against each other. Two balls are placed in the center of the court where the player will run to, grab the ball, dribble down the court and try to make the basket. The first player to make a basket gets a point for his/her team. After the basket is made the player dribbles back to center court, returns the ball to where it was placed and then returns to the their team. This teaches players how to maneuver and dribble during a game.

Speed Drills

During this drill, the players will form in a circle, with one player in the center or the coach in the center with a soft ball, while everyone else should have a basketball. The person in the center will call a player’s name and throw the softball. The player who was called will chase after the ball while the other players bounce their balls as fast as they can. Once the player catches the softball, they will take three steps away from the player they are closest too, after which they throw the softball at a target. If the player hits the target, the other players trade places and switch balls. However, if a player misses they take a place in the center of the circle to throw the softball.
